With our lovely big gardens in Richings Park, there is much we can do to help this endangered species whose biggest threat is loss of habitat. They need dead wood to thrive, with larvae feeding on it for up to seven years before emerging as majestic stag beetles. Sadly, dead wood is often removed by gardeners and landowners, destroying any larvae before they’ve had a chance to thrive. If we leave in place old tree stumps and build log pyramids, we can create safe places for females to lay their eggs. You can read more about them here.
